The myth of shareholder value

Is there a conflict between the pursuit of shareholder value and sustainable economic growth? In my opinion there certainly is. Recent scandals like those of Enron and WorldCom have shown the economic world that too much focus on shareholder value may well threaten a company’s continuity. As a consequence, the important position shareholder value has in management thinking needs re-evaluation.
